Bruins pay top dollar to land Hampus Lindholm from Ducks – The Athletic

The exchange

Bruins get: defenseman Hampus Lindholm. The Ducks retain 50% of Lindholm’s $5.2 million AAV cap.

Ducks get: 2022 first-round pick; second-round picks in 2023 and 2024; defenders Urho Vaakanainen and John Moore.

Dom Luszczyszyn: Oh my, what a huge booty for Hampus Lindholm – who suggests his reputation has yet to catch up with his recent results. Lindholm was once one of the best defensemen in the league, but this season the Ducks have been a bit better with him off the ice.

Their expected goal difference drops to 0.23 of 60 with Lindholm on the ice, the worst mark of his career and good for a rate of 46%. He has the lowest rating on Anaheim by a sizable margin and has a goal percentage to match. A first and two seconds is a lot to pay for.

These results pale in comparison to what Lindholm once was, which was closer to an expected and actual goal ratio of 55%. Lindholm is playing tough minutes on a weak team with an unproven partner, but that doesn’t completely excuse his numbers. It is for this reason that Lindholm should not move the needle much at just 0.3 wins. It was once closer to 1.5 kills, a value that would have made commercial carrying much more palatable.

That said, there are also reasons to expect Lindholm’s projected valuation to improve against a much stronger Boston team.
